Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any significant awards ceremony draws close, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
